I believe there is an EFI limitation in OS X Mountain Lion that will not allow the 2010 i5/i7 Macbook Pro's to be upgraded over 8GB RAM. The type of RAM needed is DDR3 PC3-8500 1066. Mac pro -> Can use non-ecc ram - most folks didn't know this - as long as you don't mix Same with OG intel 17" imac - you can then turn them around to smart folks with mad profit since that mac mini 1,1 that could only run snow leopard was $100 and you just sold it using some leftover parts and sweat - for $260 :)

I put el cheapo DDR2-800 sodimm in my mac mini 1,1 - flashed it to a 2,1 - new 250gb drive from a pc laptop that got an ssd - threw $20 core 2 duo in it - loaded up LION -> flawless. sell/donate the old ram and do the right thing. It's when the SPD was not used correctly or missing that the machine then defaults to balls-in/out and freaks out - or mismatching memory - no point in running mismatched memory with today's pricing. I rebuild old mac's like 17 core duo/ mac mini 1,1 all the way up to 20.5" and mac pro - you can use any modern memory that is appropriate now - If the unit is spec'd for DDR3-1066 and you rock the same voltage DDR3-1333 it will be quite fine because the SPD chip will also contain the DDR3-1066 speed ratings.
